www.guildwiki.com is free. I saw my friend's Prima guide. By the time he got the game (3 months ago) it was totally useless, with almost every description skewed and most of the walkthroughs worthless due to random updates and balances XD.

Exactly what I heard about the guide for Guild Wars. I am not for sure if it was by Prima or maybe Bradygames but I heard it wasn't even worth the paper its written on because the game has changed so much. I agree that the forums are THE best to learn EVERYTHING about this game.

The maps alon in the guide will be worth the 14 dollars, do your self a favor and get it. Ever wonder where the bulk of information on the forums comes from?
The Book will be fairly viable for a few weeks.
I still use my Guide from Phrophecies Daily when doing missions.
Aside from a few moved or added NPC's, a few quest updates, and skill updates....(all of which have handy updated notes by me in my guide) it's a great tool.
Edit: so excited about factions I swapped a word in there

Do you work for prima or something? You can get everything for free from this is site, Guildwiki and guildwars freaks. Don't waste your money.

many people enjoy the guide simply for something to read that's game related.. i imagine it's the same as reading the instruction manual after you've already played the game... a $13 instruction manual.

no, not whatever.
the prima guide provides misleading information, defeating the purpose of paying for it.
online websites are constantly evolving to account for new changes, they are freely available.
they also provide oooooooodles of random crap to read, in excess of anything a single book could muster.
the only thing a prima guide is good for, is putting your coffee on when your up all night on that first night, and second night, and third....
and honestly, i think i might just use a coaster instead - atleast that does what its designed for.

Er, yeah... I've heard nothing but horror stories about the first Prima Guide, so I wouldn't bother with the new one. Just use Guild Wiki, that has the benefit of being changed when the game gets changed.
If you want it for the maps, feel free then. It's not like they're going to change those. Just, don't rely on it for anything else.

I enjoy the artwork, and reading the Developers comments, the maps, it'll have a list of the skills (though they may not be accurate for long), a nice poster map to put on the wall, mission walkthroughs (invaluable information)....I'm, just a big fan of the games.

Make that www.guildwiki.org.
But other than that you're right. The Prima guide for Prophecies was so full of blatant errors, it was laughable.

lol is that your response to reasoned argument when you cant defend your position?
i think you may be the only person that thinks the prima guide is worth anything.
i can only assume you are employed by the publisher in some way.
no biggy tho, each to their own, im just making sure this thread has plenty of the 'dont bother with the prima guide' message in it to ensure newer players dont get suckered in.

My guide is well-used, and looking rather scrappy at the moment because of that. I enjoyed the little side comments that were written in it, and the unbiased presentation of the information. Very few sites can boast that.
Guild Wiki:
Quote:
Mesmers are best suited in preventing their opponent from achieving their goals, whether that be to heal, cast spells or attack.
|
Any mesmer on this site will tell you there is more to a mesmer than this, and even STRONGER points to a mesmer than interrupts.
The wiki makes necros sound like they are just degen providers, but most of us know that that isn't the case.
In terms of getting into the game, the internet is the WORST source to consult for a description of game mechanics because it is so biased. The ONLY reason I tried a mesmer was because the prima made the profession sound attractive. I played mesmer and loved it.
The factions prima might be less useful to those of us who have played a little while because we already have a fair idea about each of the classes, even the new ones. But certainly for a brand new player - mis-information and all - the prima is a very good guide to the game.

His position doesnt require any defense. Yours does. You state that the Prima guide provides "misleading information". First of all, this is true of the Prophecies guide, and only true now after a lot of changes have been made to the game. That doesnt mean that the same standard will extend to the Factions guide, and is therefore a baseless assumption on your part.
The benefit of the Prima Guide is that it offers information early. Any errors or omissions can be corrected by the community. That makes it worth something. Would I buy it ? Never. But I also wouldnt discourage others from purchasing it, or make blanket statements about a product that I have no idea about.

Well, if you are buying it for the maps, you are still missing the FoW and UW maps, not to mention the added content of Sorrow's Furnace...
